Choosing to Follow
Lehi beheld a strait and narrow path, which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which he stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world (1 Nephi 8:20). Later he cast his eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth (1 Nephi 8:26). Some people fell away into forbidden paths and were lost (1 Nephi 8:28), and some were drowned in the depths of the fountain (1 Nephi 8:32), which was filthiness (1 Nephi 15:27).
The oracle drawing "footprint" showed the way where the people desired to go.
Lehi saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward, that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which he stood (1 Nephi 8:21). They were on their way to the tree of life. The oracle drawing “on the way to” is shown below.
This is the way our Heavenly Father wants us to follow.
The path of footprints should point straight to the tree of life, as it is shown above. Those who do not take paths toward the tree of life will find themselves at the great and spacious building, in forbidden paths, or in the river of filthy water. The direction of the footprints will then point to these other areas according to the layout of Lehi’s dream.
In Lehi's dream, there were many people who didn't follow the strait and narrow path.
Lehi also beheld,“there arose a mists of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost”(1Nephi 8:23). His son Nephi explained the meaning of mists later,“And the mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil, which blindeth the eyes, and hardeneth the hearts of the children of men, and leadeth them away into broad roads, that they perish and are lost”(1Nephi 12:17).
A man's heart is on this world, then his path of footprints will be shown below.
“Can he reach the tree of life?” No, in this situation, he can’t make it! The following oracle drawing symbolizes this negative meaning.
This path of footprints is the other oracle drawing shown as "I,myself", but with the meaning of "human weakness" inside.

“ Wherefore, ye need not suppose that I and my father are the only ones that have testified, and also taught them. Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is. Amen” (1 Nephi 22: 31).
